Might this replace Celtic Crossing?

While waiting for the Apple Next Big Thing event, I noticed Arstechnica was sponsored by Red Stag. Morbid curiosity led me to this review on about.com. While Darrin's bacon infusion experiment was in need of refining (Jeremiah Weed was just too sweet to mix with bacon). Anyone have thoughts on trying a classic Bourbon infused with black cherry? My guess is the review is correct in that it's medicinal cherry after taste will be too much but as a mix it might have legs. Could this turn stomachs as quickly as Celtic Crossing?

I open the floor to discussions, gagging sounds and ridicule.

  1. I would not be in favor. I have yet to try any sort of hard liquor that has been infused with cherries that hasn't tasted like cough syrup. As an extra bottle specifically for mixing, it would be ok, but not as the Bourbon-of-the-month.

  2. I agree with Darrin. I have yet to find any liquor or beer with cherry that doesn't disagree with my palette.

  3. I agree with you. I'm curious to try it but there's so little time to try actual good whiskey that to waste that time on cough syrup seem wasteful.

  4. yooper4ever - even the New Glarius cherry beer was horrific. I never finished my 4 pack of that one.

  5. Really? I never tried New Glarus' cherry beer. I'll know to avoid it now.

  6. I'm pretty sure nothing will replace Celtic Crossing in pure disgust factor. The cherry by itself would probably be iffy, but generally those mix really well with Coke. Maybe a little too well since there's virtually no liquor taste to it. Ditto vanilla.
BTW, keep in mind it's March when considering "the purchase."

  7. Chief - are you suggesting something, maybe of Irish origin? We had been talking about going less expensive this month (Jim Beam Rye since I never actually recorded it anywhere and it's oh so nummy)...Jameson, Tullamore or Black Bush maybe?

  8. Anytime people talk about drinking cough syrup, it brings me back to the high school days of getting "Robed" up on the 'Tussin before Friday nights football game...

  9. I've had Sam Adams Cherry Wheat and Red Stag (for comparison). I can say with complete certainty that Cherry Wheat is terrible -- its the exact cough syrup flavor you're worrying about. Red Stag, on the other hand, does a really good job of keeping that hidden from you. Maybe: a Dr. Pepper of Whiskeys is the best way to tag Red Stag. It does mix very well, but its also tolerable as a shot/drink.
